Hand Washing Diapers with Washing Soda

So this whole using flats thing for a week and hand washing has got me thinking. I need to get my hands on some washing soda. Why you ask? Washing soda changes the PH of the water making detergent more effective and also easier to rinse out. I'm gonna say that is very important for hand washing because it would be really easy to get build up on your diapers and doing rinse upon rinse while hand washing is not easy. I've been told washing soda can be found at Kroger and Home Depot. I have yet to look so I could be wrong. The same company that makes the "popular" brand of baking soda makes the washing soda just so you know what your looking for. You might want to consider adding a tbsp to your wash cycle if your hand washing. I've been told that it is very similar/the same thing as RLR which is what I currently use to strip our diapers once a month or as needed. I'll try stripping our diapers in it and let you know how it goes. Have you ever used washing soda? If so what for? How did it work?

How do you know?

How do you know when your ready to leave your baby at home even if its just with daddy for two hours. He doesn't nurse frequently anymore and doesn't usually nurse during those said hours not for nutrition anyways and it isn't during any sleeping hours so he wouldn't need me to put him to bed. I know he could handle it. What about me though? Can I handle it or will I go mad? I had a hard time leaving Z up until Ry was born. Somehow after Ry was born Z turned into a big kid and it was easier to leave him with daddy while I did what I had to do. I am so attached to my kids that not knowing exactly where they are and if they are safe scares me. I'm sure I have nothing to fear thats just how I work. Any possible worry that could go through your head goes through mine and it SUCKS! So tonight I might try and leave Ry with daddy while I work. Its only two ours. I can do it. I think.

Reusing disposable diapers. Really?!

I saw the article recently posted talking about how people were having to leave their kids in diapers longer than they should and even cleaning out and reusing disposable diapers I became really sad and then angry. These disposable diaper companies diss cloth and make it sound disgusting but because of their high prices people are actually doing unhealthy things to their kids by leaving them in a diaper too long or reusing a disposable diaper. Before we started using cloth I thought it was gross to use reusable diapers but now that has changed. My diapers are clean. If you asked me to lick one that I took straight out of the dryer after it had been washed and dried sure I'd do it. However if you rinsed out a disposable diaper and dried it there is no way I'd lick it. I wouldn't even allow it in my home. I myself cannot afford disposable diapers. I can't afford all the rash cream that I'd need to keep my kids rash free while wearing them. I also cannot afford all the migraine medicine I'd have to take from smelling them in my home. If you are having a hard time affording diapers please consider using cloth. The only time I have ever had to touch poop is when we hand washed because we didn't have a washer or dryer. We switched to cloth diapers because my husband was with out a job. I didn't know how we were going to keep my sons bottom covered. I knew he was too young at 5 months to be forced into potty training so we went to cloth and I was willing to hand wash them. There was no way I was going to leave my son in a diaper longer than 3 hours no matter what type of diaper. It was a god send even though it was sometimes a pain to hand wash cloth diapers we had that extra $30 per week to spend on things like food or gas or even a date. Cloth diapers can be done extremely cheap by buying flour sack cloths. I believe walmart has them 4 for $4 which is so cheap! Thats the cheapest I've ever seen any diaper related insert or anything. Only downfall is you have to fold it up but its not that hard. A flat because its so thin will wash and dry easily and quickly. Cloth diapers can also be very expensive there are some brands that are very fancy. I like to call them gourmet diapers so maybe those aren't for the person who can't afford disposable diapers but at least they are a one time purchase that will pay for themselves and then some. If you cannot afford your disposable diapers and want to make the switch to cloth please let me know I would love to help you pick out what you need to diaper your baby without having to reuse a diaper that was made to be used once or to keep your baby in a diaper too long which isn't healthy.

Cloth Diaper Challenge

So Dirty Diaper Laundry is doing a challenge for anyone wanting to participate I believe. You have to use flats for a whole week for every diaper change except at night. Also you must hand wash the flats. I'm all over this. We are about to try flats soon so thats not an issue but hand washing cloth diapers I've been there and done that. When we first started cloth diapering we only had 6 diapers and I was hand washing in a bath tub and drying outside. We didn't own a washer or dryer. Yes I touched poop. It was gross yes but it could have been worse. I've not decided yet if we will participate in the challenge with both boys or just one of them but Ry will definitely be participating. Z may just partially participate. It depends on how many flats we can get our hands on. Read about the challenge here Stay tuned to hear about how it is using flats and hand washing them. I plan on taking video and some pictures of how we go about washing them.

Comparing Types of Cloth Diapers

All-in-two
An all-in-two is a diaper with a cover and an interchangeable insert. The insert gets dirty and you remove it and add a new one. I believe most people would air out the cover before putting it back on their child and wash the cover when it gets poop on it or smells of urine. An ai2 can be used easily with disposable inserts as well during times where you have power outages and cannot wash diapers or if you are traveling. Different ai2 diapers that I have used on my kids are: GroVia, Otter Blotters, Sweet Pea ai3 (they call it an ai3 because the insert has two parts but essentially its an ai2), Weehuggers, Monkey Doodlez Tuck and Go, Bum Essentials. From time to time I've used my rumparooz cover and just laid a gflapper in it and used that like an ai2. In my experience an ai2 is a very cost effective method of diapering. You can use one cover for around four diaper changes which means more inserts and less covers definitely cost friendly :) I also like an ai2 because its easy to add more absorbency. In our Monkey Doodlez Tuck and Go's I add two bamboo gflappers for night time use and haven't had a leak with that ever. My current favorite system of diapers is ai2 diapers because most of them fit both of my kids who are drastically different in size at 16lbs and 35lbs. I also prefer an ai2 because I know we are going to be visiting my parents soon. They have an HE washer that beats the crap out of cloth diapers I'd prefer to hand wash the covers and let the inserts take the beating because I know they can handle it. The covers are more delicate and I prefer not to have to change the elastic out when we get home from our trip. As far as disposable inserts go my favorite is the flip ones because they are cheap. I doubt they are the best but they are $4.95 for 18 of them and I never need more than that so I like that. Other brands we've tried are gdiapers which you can flush if you are brave enough to risk your toilet and pipes to that and GroVia which have cool adhesive so they don't slide but in my wee huggers and tuck and go's I didn't need the adhesive so i didn't feel i needed those.

All-in-one
For people who are resistant to cloth diapering or don't want to touch much of anything an aio is for you. Personally I am not a fan of them. Different brands I've tried are Tots Bots and Monkey Doodlez. I'm sure there is probably some I'm forgetting but if I can't remember them then maybe there is a reason that they didn't make an impact. I have no complaints about either of the diapers I've listed. They are great, very absorbent and cute. They fit chunky legs and chicken legs. They fit kids with a high rise even. I'm just not a fan because I'm snobbish with my organic inserts. My boys are sensitive down under so I like to keep them comfortable and an aio is harder to strip because you chance wearing the pul out. There is definitely a time for an aio though. One example being church or a visit to the inlaws. Why? Do you think church workers or your mother in law will want to touch a pee soaked insert? I doubt it. Chances are they'll be hesitant enough about cloth diapers get one or two of these for the squeamish people that way you wont have to unstuffy cold pocket diapers later.

Pocket
Pocket diapers saved us. We started out journey with gdiapers which I'm not a fan of at all. Its great that they work for some but they certainly do not work for us and that makes me sad because they are adorable. There are lots and lots of pocket diapers. Bumgenius, Happy Heiny, Tiny Tush, Rumparooz, Sweet Pea, Thirsties, the list is really endless. In pocket diapers there are two categories the ones that have just one pocket and you have to remove the insert before washing or the ones with two pockets (thirsties & sweet pea) that the inserts just come out on their own in the wash. The double pocket diapers are amazing! Genius! My husband hates touching inserts so I try to leave these diapers at the top of the pile when I know he's watching the kids he appreciates it but he also doesn't mind an ai2 where he can just flip the insert into the pail either way a pocket is great. You can stuff them full and they have the stay dry layer to keep baby comfortable. Only downside is the diaper is a use once then wash before you can use again kind of deal which some people are fine with but if your trying to squeeze the diapers through two kids sorry its not going to happen with a pocket diaper believe me I'm trying...hence my switch to ai2 diapers.

Prefold
I got my first prefold recently. A sweet pea prefold because I love all the other sweet pea products I was sure I'd at least like their prefold. So far so good its absorbent and soft and the stitching colors are cute green for the newborn size and purple for the infant size. I'm curious to see what color the baby size will be when they come out. I'm hoping for a cute orange or something. I got a snappi to go with my prefold because there is no way on earth I'm comfortable using a pin near my boys. Some people do it and thats great but its just not for me. The good thing about prefolds is that you will get them through a dozen kids probably. They have no elastic that needs replacing. You can strip them and it won't break down PUL because there isn't any. No elastic you have to worry about repairing. Prefolds are definitely very genius if you don't mind learning how to fold. Honestly I can say prefolds are not something I'd ever do full time. My husband is completely not on board with them. I'm also convinced he will break the snappi so I don't allow him to touch it. I don't want to buy another one I only have two prefolds so to buy another snappi would be kinda lame. I can say that I'm considering prefolds for my youngest for his night time diaper. I put a fitted on him currently that I'm starting to dislike because its mostly microfiber and its smells a little. I'd also do prefolds on newborns because they aren't wiggly and because I tend to have full term five pound babies that no diaper fits well unless I make it myself. A prefold would be cheap and would involve no sewing for me which is great! All I'd have to do is make some fleece covers and I'd be set.

Flat
I have never tried a flat. You have to cut me some slack though I just tried a prefold for the first time recently so I'll get there I promise. After talking to some friends I do see how a flat could definitely be superior to a prefold at least past the preemie and newborn sizes because they are one size. Its a 27 inch square of fabric that you pin or snappi on your child. There are nifty ways of folding it and I really want to try one or make one since its just a square and I'm sure I'm capable of making a square. Like a prefold you would need a cover or expect wet spots on your carpet and couch but they are great for airing your little ones bottom out without a puddle of pee or a pile of poop on your floor which is always a plus! I like that these are so compact if your traveling you can fit a lot of them in a bag easily. They also dry quickly. This is not a husband, inlaw, daycare or squeamish friendly diaper you will touch pee.

Fitted
Fitteds are amazing. It took me quite a while to actually try a fitted but I did finally once I couldn't find a diaper that would work for my oldest at night. Eventually I found a good combo of inserts so he no longer wears a fitted at night. He doesn't hold still long enough for me to get a fitted and a cover on him. I do however like them on my youngest however he has just started to realized he can escape diaper changes which is a major bummer to me. Anyways fitteds are great for people who want a really absorbent diaper but don't want to use prefolds or flats. They don't want to deal with pins so they have that option. Lots of fitteds come with snap or velcro closure. I like fitteds on a newborn because they are expert pee machines and pros at leaking out of anything a fitted makes it harder to leak because its absorbent at all angles. With a good cover a prefold can be bulletproof (not literally of course). I have yet to find a favorite fitted that makes me very sad. I find ones that work and do the job but I don't love them. My suggestion is avoid fitteds with microfiber in them because there are so many layers of it in a fitted they will be hard to keep stink free. This is where you want bamboo, cotton or hemp. Bamboo is my favorite as far as stink free goes then hemp then cotton but that's just from my experience with them.

I hope you feel more educated on cloth diapers now if you have any questions please shoot me an email dirtydiaperdiva@gmail.com If you are local to me please make sure you check out www.dfwclothdiapergroup.com and sign up for The Great Cloth Diaper Change no matter where you live I'm sure there is a local place. Most of the diapers I've tried are available at The Nappy Shoppe go look and see what is there because she adds stuff almost every day.

Beco butterfly2 I don't like it.

I was skeptical about the beco butterfly (the purple carrier) it's got this internal insert that I guess makes it easier for people who aren't comfortable with babywearing. Or people who need to transfer baby in carrier from one parent to another without removing baby from the carrier. That sounds like a great idea. You'd think it would work wonderfully and be quick and great like all the other carriers but it is not. It took me twice as long to get it on. Because I have to put the carrier on myself then put the baby in and it's just too slow for my liking. I'm sure it would be great for tandem babywearing if you wanted to put the back baby on first which I think is easier because you could have this buckled already. Other than cuteness I think that's the only thing I like about it. It's soft, durable, strong. Can handle my 35lb son easily. I just personally do not like the extra work. With an infant I'm sure this carrier is amazing because it has an infant insert that comes with it. And I can breastfeeding this carrier by simply loosening the straps and adjusting it to either the left or right. The inner y panel was great at keeping drool on the carrier instead of my clothes. I found this carrier extremely hard to adjust to use with more than one kid. If I adjusted it for Ry it was off for Z but if I adjusted it for Z then Ry had way too much room and was bonking his face into the buckles which are placed right where the baby is eye level at. This carrier needs drool pads or something to keep it safe. I also dislike a carrier that has that chest clip that I have to buckle behind my back it makes it very awkward to get it on and I've pulled a muscle getting it on before much like other carriers like the ergo. It's a carrier that I'd prefer for back carries only but it specializes in small babies which would mean a front carry would be preferred. I know quite a few people love this carrier but I just can't. Sorry.

Here is Z in the butterfly. He's 35lbs maybe more.

We were jumping to make him giggle.

Here is Ry in the butterfly he was 13lbs when the pic was taken.

Here we are nursing him in the butterfly

He's asleep on my back here.

Another one of Z on my back.

This was the first time I put him on my back. The straps attaching the outside panel to the inner y panel are hard to adjust hence the crookedness.

How many times can a diaper be repaired?

First off I should say that the diapers that I have repaired more than once have been to hell and back when we lived with my parents. They had hard water and an HE washer that beat the crap out of my diapers. Well my kids diapers. I don't wear diapers. Heh. Anyways. I have some tiny tush diapers and some happy heiny diapers that are standing the test of time. They certainly don't need a facelift their pul is just fine they do however need a tummy tuck aka they need their elastic replaced and some need new Velcro. Not all elastic is created equally. But these diapers we've had since the beginning there are about 9 of them. They have been repaired twice now and are still going. They are three years old. I repaired them a little early the first time to prepare for my youngest to be using them with his older brother. I wanted them to be fresh and ready to handle another kid. I just repaired them again a year after they had initially been repaired. I'd say that's pretty good for what they've been through. I had to do so many extra washes and rinses when we lived with my parents that it was so hard on the diapers. Now because we have an old school washer and our water isn't quite as hard washing is easier on them. That being said I don't mind repairing diapers if you cannot sew or are a newbie let me know I can try and walk you through it or repair them myself. I can almost hear the ka-Ching in my head after I repair one it's like wow this thing has already been used long enough to pay for itself now it's just working overtime. Yeah! So what's the most times you've repaired a diaper or had one repaired?

Boba Review

I didn't think I would like the boba. I didn't think it would be a carrier that I could recommend to other people. I was so unbelievably wrong. I am embarrassed to say that I didn't think that I'd like it because I love it. If you plan on wearing a toddler or have tall kids this carrier is amazing. I don't so much love it for front carries because I have to buckle something behind my neck and I dislike doing that but for back carries this carrier is the way to go. I can breastfeed in this carrier. I can easily get either one of my kids in it. The Tweet one is gorgeous!!! I love the foot straps they make Z so excited it is the only carrier he will drag out of the closet for me to put on. He enjoys sliding his feet back and forth in them like it's a fun game. The back on this carrier is higher than say an ergo or something which is a plus for older kids when they like to do that leaning back thing. If I were to tandem wear my kids I can guarantee the first carrier I'd reach for on my back would he a boba. The hood is also genius it snaps on and off so you can get it on the carrier if baby is already sleeping but you can roll it up and loop the stretchy band around it to keep it on the carrier but still show off the cute pattern or color you got. The waist padding isn't crazy thick like some carriers which is nice. I really like this carrier a lot it's definitely one you should consider if your looking to do mostly back carries.

Boba is a Soft Structured baby carrier (SSC) that is intended for children between 15 to 45 lbs. Boba has a few extra inches of height to keep your center of gravity closer to your body and support your little one's back. The innovative thing about the Boba carrier is that there are foot straps attached to the waist belt for the child’s feet to sit in enabling a healthy sitting position for the child. The footstraps not only give little tired legs a rest, but support the legs in a flexed abducted (froglike) position which naturally tilts the pelvis, fills out the hip sockets, and aligns the spine.

They also have a great spot on their site where they compare types of carriers the link for it is Here

Pictures below were copied from the Boba website.

I have recommended that The Nappy Shoppe stock them and Sharni the owner has said that she will stock them so look forward to those if your going to buy any carrier from The Nappy Shoppe please email me and we will make sure it's the right carrier for you. I'll have pictures of me using the Boba with my boys soon but right now it's out on loan to a friend so it'll have to wait.

Below are pictures of my friend Brenda over at Adventures of a Crispy Mama wearing my boba with her two boys. I think from the looks of things you can tell they approve.

Her oldest son did not like the foot straps so they didn't use them and her youngest wasn't quite big enough for them yet. I need to get a picture of my oldest with them because I think he's a great size for them.

Why do I like ai2 type diapers?

If you look at my cloth diaper stash you'll notice that we have quite a few grovia and sweet pea ai3 (which I consider an ai2) and weehugger and otter blotter diapers. Well having two kids in diapers means a lot of laundry I like ai2 diapers because the cover is reusable as long as it doesn't stink or get poop on it so for Ry who doesn't ever get poop on a cover it works well inserts themselves take up less room in my pail than a pocket diaper so more room is a plus in my opinion. Z will get poop on a cover if he poops in it so it's not as convenient for him but if we are going out and I take a sweet pea ai3 the cover and insert fits both of my kids so I can take a cover and a few inserts and know that we will be set. Its great. I prefer ai2 diapers also because its easier to get the poop off an insert than a pocket diaper. I can spray or dunk (shudder) just the insert easier than the cover or pocket diaper. They just tend to be more convenient for me maybe they aren't your favorite and thats ok because there are many different styles of diapers. Which is good because grovia for example I cannot use on my oldest son he pees too much at one time and they leak every time but sweet pea diapers don't leak on him. Ry my youngest is a heavy wetter but doesn't pee all at one so he rarely leaks out a diaper but he can soak an insert. I like weehuggers because they are adorable and fit both my boys really well. Their snaps are great and their Velcro is very sticky as well. Out of my ai2 diapers my favorites would be the sweet pea ones because they are one size and they fit my 14lb son and my 35lb son one with thick legs and a high rise and the other with chicken legs and a Buddha belly. My other favorite is weehuggers because they are so gosh dang adorable.

Whats in my diaper stash?

I've been asked numerous times when working what kind of diapers do I have? What diapers do my kids actually use? Do I really like the diaper I'm trying to sell you or am I just saying it to sell it?

I have tons of diapers. Too many diapers. I've been lucky to trade for diapers quite a few times and inserts and other things. I had made quite a few diapers that currently don't fit either of my kids as they were a 3mo size and a 24mo size and neither of my kids fit into those currently so they are put away. Only counting the diapers that currently fit my kids we have enough for 140 diaper changes. Holy cow! They aren't all photographed because some are in the dryer and our pail is full ready to go in the washer and a handful of them are sitting without elastic and Velcro waiting to be repaired.

This is the top drawer on the left otter blotter inserts that I use in weehuggers and tuck and go diapers. Then some otter blotter multiple size inserts that I use in a otter blotter cover. Then grovia/grobaby inserts and then two rows of sweet pea inserts. Whew. Out of breath yet?

This is the second drawer which is the depth of two drawers so there is a lot of stuff in here the two left rows are all pocket diapers the pile with the black diaper is diapers that you don't have to remove the insert before tossing in the pail because they are either aio diapers or ones with a pocket on each end so the insert comes out on it's own. The pile with the purple cover is night time diapers usually fitteds. The pile under the blue diaper is my diapers with snap in inserts like otter blotter or grovia diapers. The owl pile is my weehugger pile and the pile with the green diaper is my sweet pea ai3 pile. To the right is a large stack of sweet pea inserts I love them lots.

These are Z's diapers his drawer is lacking because the diapers I'm repairing are his. She shares the sweet pea ai3 diapers with Ry that were kept in the previous drawer. I made the two light blue and the one light green diaper that you see in the picture.

The diapers on the left are night time diapers they are booroi and tuck and go diapers. Then his weehuggers are there as well and some extra inserts on the right.

Bottom drawer is wet bags, pail liners, wipes and socks are under all that as well as bibs. I don't keep things folded because this drawer is always getting emptied by Z he is so helpful, not!

So that's a portion of our stash it's missing a good 20 diapers out of the stuff that fits but you get an idea at least of what we use. If your curious about my opinion about a certain diaper please let me know I will answer honestly.
